Free to Be We (We are Not a Monolith...)

Penesha & Tray Joseph

😊💃🏾🕺🏾🏃🏾‍♂️🏃🏽‍♀️ We know our political posts rub people the wrong way. Even our own people, at times. We try to avoid sharing our thoughts, because each time we do that follow count goes down. Listen, we have learned that you cannot be everyone's cup of tea. We know that how we think doesn't fit neatly into how others think Black people ought to be. We aren't mentioned very often in circles that say they wish to promote and uplift Black authors out here doing the darn thing.

But yet we say WE are not a monolith.

As stated before in an older post: A young lady unfollowed after she discovered "They're Not So Bad" was not about Black Girl empowerment. She was only looking for books to empower her little girls: books about being proud of their hair and skin. We absolutely get it.

Another lady wanted to link up and promote our books after discovering we were a husband and wife team of Black authors. She visited our site and got back to us and said she no longer wanted to promote our work. I knew/assumed why. I thanked her for her consideration and asked why the sudden change of heart. She didn't respond. She decided not to support any of our work, period... and unfollowed. That's okay. We understand the need for Black leading characters. What's so wrong with having a book about a young Black girl named Jade who happens to be afraid of spiders and whose younger brother is a "self-proclaimed Spiderologist"? But those who know have discovered how unique, hilarious and creative our stories are. They WILL become movies someday.

As authors, we weren't following a wave. We aren't out here creating just to follow trends. We are artist, truly passionate about writing children's books. Before marriage we created music together, performed on many local stages and had a blast (when I wasn't nervous, of course😊🎤) Now we make amazing books for children. Becoming parents almost a decade ago inspired us even more to continue to hone our craft. We have been creating stories together since 2011 and have written many stories that simply need to be illustrated.

Stop putting Black authors in a box. We are free spirits, always and forever💃🏾🕺🏾😊
